Newark Mayor Cory Booker has formally announced that he is running to fill the late U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg’s seat.
The Democrat announced his candidacy in Newark on Saturday morning. He says he hopes to change the climate in Washington, just as, he says, he has improved the city of Newark.
“I am here because I know who we are and what we are capable of doing together for New Jersey and for our nation.” the two-term mayor stated.
The state would hold a special election to fill the vacant Senate seat in October, three weeks before the regularly scheduled election in November, when Gov. Chris Christie will face off against state Sen. Barbara Buono.
